Alternate Picking

If you are new at playing the guitar then there is a technique you should become familiar with called alternate picking. You use a pick at an upward and downward slant as you do a continuous run with your picking hand. You can use this with the plectrum method of playing or for tremolo picking.

This picking method allows you to make a more fluid like motion while you are playing picked phrases. It has other advantages such as allowing you to switch picking directions so that you don not tire your arm out as fast.

Though there are some disadvantages to playing this way but many famous musicians still use it often. They even use it when another technique might be easier to use. They think that is gives their playing sounds more consistency and it lets them control the tone better. Give this a try and see what you think.
